Surviving 2020

2020 is a cluster fuck with no end in sight. You’ve developed a new bond with your fridge and are now basically in a co-dependent relationship with an inanimate object. Even the dog is emotional eating (no, just us 🤷‍♀️).

My theory for how we’re going to get through this is:

  1. Accept that you’re going to eat your way through this.
  2. Exercise because #1 is totally happening. And we all know “Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people just don’t shoot their husbands.” If you have a husband take extra special notice of #2.
  3. Find a way to escape reality. Read a book. Watch a movie. Write. Don’t take drugs or drink to escape reality. That is just a way to kick yourself in the pants. Besides, that’s what we have sugar for (see #1).
  4. Have regular solo/household dance parties. These help – I promise.
  5. Find ways to feel better/calmer even if it’s for 5 minutes.
  6. Focus on things you can change. Marie Kondo your house because you can control that tip.
  7. Don’t watch/read stuff that stresses you out. This might mean spending less time on social media our scouring news sites. Sometimes you need a little break because it’s rare that we see good news stories and it can get overwhelming.
  8. Remember that a lot of people, most, in fact, are in a lot of pain right now. Be kind. If someone overreacts they’re probably struggling. But also know that you don’t have to spend time with assholes.
  9. Make something more beautiful – your office, your garden, your bedroom…
  10. Find a way to improve yourself. Look inward & address issues that stop you from being comfortable alone/still.
  11. Work out how many people’s opinions of you you actually give a shit about. Stop trying to please the others – they can take it or leave it. If they leave it that’s fine. It means there’s one less butthead to create tension in your life.
  12. Create something. If it sucks oh well. Because you’ve already sorted out #11 you are free to give zero fucks about the opinions of buttheads.
  13. Find a way to feel connected to someone. While what you and your fridge have together is beautiful, you are the one who has to keep putting things into the fridge in order to keep that relationship going. That’s what we have technology for.
  14. Wear a fucking mask, clean your hands, socially distance, GET TESTED & STAY HOME if you feel unwell in any way.
  15. Stay the fuck home when you’re supposed to be quarantined.
